This book is a culmination of the " Herstory-the Legal History of Chinese American Women" exhibition.
The entire content of this book are derived from the cases of the U.S. Supreme Court and the supreme courts of various states, specifically, cases fought by the Chinese American women who disproved the ancient Chinese teaching of " Only unpleasant endings emerge from lawsuits".

There are not many researched works on the topic of Chinese American women on the market, especially the collective history of Chinese American women dating back to the 1850's. I feel so incredibly grateful to be able to find and read this wonderful eye-opening book, especially during Chinese New Year! This book is proving to be so valuable and meaningful to me and to my friends!Herstory by Dr. Chang C. Chen ( 邱彰律師 ) , documents the Herstory Exhibition. At this moment, it is being held at Los Angeles Central Library, and will most likely continue to make its way around the globe. Herstory is very well written and contains many precious photographs and images! It includes important historical facts, which come from the U.S. Supreme Court cases and the Supreme Court cases of various states from 1852 to 2012. It also includes accounts regarding lesser-known Chinese American women as well as stories about celebrities, who have fought and won the fight for their rights through the legal process. A lot of time and effort must have gone into the massive legal research required, to complete this monumental achievement!
Herstory is a bilingual book. Each section of this work appears in English and in Chinese. In the beginning of the book, the author provides a list of legal events and important milestones in chronological order. Notes and bibliographical references are provided throughout the book at the bottom of the page. I find the way in which this book has been presented to be very helpful!
Herstory is the inspirational and moving history of the Chinese women in America. It provides accounts of discrimination and unfair treatment of specific Chinese American women, over the years, and how—through hard work, perseverance, and great courage—ever obstacle, one by one, was overcome.
Even though this title will be inspiring to all readers, it will be of particular interest to law students and those interested in Chinese American history.

A Chinese proverb. “Women hold up half the sky,” understates the difficult situation that immigrant Chinese women faced for well over a century in the U. S. For as hard as life was for immigrant Chinese men in America, it was in many ways worse for Chinese women, some who were tricked into coming to the U.S. and forced into prostitution, limited in educational opportunities, and lived in bachelor societies where they were one of few, if not the only, women.
A little known aspect of Chinese American history is that Chinese took legal actions as early as the 1850s to fight the inequities faced by Chinese women. Chang Chiu Chen, an attorney and former Senator in Taiwan now living in the U. S. and Herman Chan, describe landmark legal cases involving Chinese women in "Herstory, The Legal History of Chinese American Women," a small, but valuable, volume summarizing major court cases involving Chinese women. This unique resource documents outstanding examples of court cases that contributed to the improvement of the status of Chinese women in America.
Herstory The Legal History of Chinese American Women is a bilingual book from 1850 to 2012 with the Herstory Exhibit by Dr. Chang C. Chen. It was interesting to hear her lecture in the March 10 2018 San Francisco Public Library book talk.
Chinese women were not afraid to seek justice in the American Court System with Ah Toy lawsuit in1852. The 1885 Tape v. Hurley on the right to public education was a landmark case, Chinese or American, seventy years before Brown v. Board of Education. On p.37, she wrote about The Cable Act of 1922 which terminated citizenship of white American women who married Asian men. However, Chinese-American women were known to lose her citizenship for marrying an ineligible citizenship Chinese men. On p.59 She talked about Eileen Chang but the title line made a typo of Chan and not Chang. On P.18, the web link for Dolly Gee and Judy Chu were wrongly placed,
This book is not expected to complete a list of who is who among all Chinese-American women. It helps to include Judges Lillian Sing and Julie Tang for their active roles in San Francisco, California.
As a lawyer, she is suggested for another book on the valiant Chinese who seek habeas corpus and justice in the American court system with many landmark cases, such as Wong Kam Ark (in this book), the largest civil disobedience against Geary Act of Dog Tag in1892, years before Dr Martin Luther King, Chew Heong v. United States (1884), Chae Chan Ping v. United States (1889) , Fong Yue Ting v. United States (1893), Lem Moon Sing v. United States (1895) United States v. Ju Toy (1905).
This book is easy to read with pictures and Chinese and English notes. She sets an example as a role model to inspire women in legal profession for humanity and justice.
