Fort Warren was started in 1833 on Georges Island to protect the City of Boston. It was first occupied by Union Soldiers at the start of the Civil War. The government soon utilized the fort as a prison for Confederate military and political prisoners. It achieved its place in history because of many famous Confederate prisoners incarcerated within its walls. During WWI and WWII the fort, armed with huge artillery, became a mine control center for Boston Harbor. The book includes stories about the Trent Affair, the writing of the John Brown song, escapes, executions and the famous Legend of the Ghost of the Lady in Black.

Fort Warren New England Most Historic Civil War Site eBook Jay Schmidt Reviews
This is a book written by a local historian about the history of Fort Warren built on Georges Island in the middle of Boston Harbor. It starts with the original history of the island and them moves on to the decision to place a fort there and the building of the fort itself. All through the book, the legends and myths of the fort are discussed and those that do not appear to be valid are exposed.
A good amount of the book covers the American Civil War when the fort was the most active including its use as a prison for Confederate soldiers which it was never built to be. There is a good chapter on all the famous Confederate generals, soldiers, and politicians that were housed there at some time. There is also several discussions of the legend of the "Lady In Black" which is part of the fort's lore. Another is
There are several brief chapters that detail changes in the fort and its armaments after the Civil War including the time of the Spanish-American War, The First World War, and World War II. There was not much activity in the fort during these times, but it was still active and was part of the defense of the harbor and the city during all these wars.
I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the American Civil War as well as anyone looking to see how the young nation began a program to defend its major harbors including Boston. Of course anyone who lives in the area, as I do, is really going to enjoy this book. It includes some descriptions on how to find certain areas of the fort mentioned in the book when you go visiting the island. I certainly plan on taking this book with me the next time I go visit the fort.
